Start with the reason your dog needs one
A reusable nappy may help contain discharge during a heat cycle or manage light leakage. It is not a treatment for incontinence, and it cannot be relied on to prevent mating or pregnancy. If leaking is new, persistent or comes with pain, increased thirst or other symptoms, speak with a veterinarian.
Measure the waist, then check the size chart
Use a soft tape measure around the part of your dog's waist where the nappy will sit, just in front of the hind legs. Compare that number with the size chart on the product page; do not choose by breed or weight alone. If your dog falls between sizes, the larger size can allow more comfortable movement. Check that the tail opening sits comfortably and that the fastening stays secure without digging into the skin.
Check fit during a short supervised trial
Let your dog walk and sit with the nappy on. It should stay in place without bunching, rubbing or restricting movement. Watch for any irritation, and remove it if your dog seems distressed. No washable nappy is suitable for every dog or every level of leakage.
Plan for changes and washing
Change a wet or soiled nappy promptly. Rinse after use, wash gently in cold water and air dry, following the product's care instructions. A suitable disposable liner may help with heavier leakage, but it should still be changed regularly. Because a nappy needs time to dry, having a spare may make daily use easier.
